BWR: Mapfre Focuses on a Strategy to Approach the Doldrums

With the help of the trade winds, although not very strong trades, as Xabi Fernández said today, “MAPFRE” is focusing on a strategy to follow for facing the equatorial lulls, which are drawing ever-closer for the Basque Olympic champions, Iker and Xabi, now at 840 miles from 0º latitude and may provide the leading Spanish entry in the Barcelona World Race with new opportunities.

Head in the Doldrums

Iker and Xabi, who have now put Rio de Janeiro behind them, have been carefully studying meteorological models, as explained in today's videoconference by Iker Martínez: “We've spent a few days now working out how to negotiate the area, because it will influence the ideal route further ahead. It's clear that if the distances with the entries behind stick at the current level, the climb up the Atlantic may give us the opportunity to take some risks, so we've also been looking at those possibilities for the past few days too."

“We are preparing as best we can to get through the Doldrums over the next few days and here we are, with light wind, but slowly and surely moving forward, without stopping, which is what matters," added Xabi. So "MAPFRE" is moving forward at 11 knots on an ever more Northwesterly course, whilst the leader is sailing faster, reaping the rewards of being some 456.5 miles ahead of the Spaniards. “We are preparing as best we can to get through the Doldrums over the next few days."

“We'll see how ‘Virbac Paprec 3’ deals with it over the next two or three days", said Xabi, remembering also the entries behind "MAPFRE": "It's also important to keep the yachts behind us at the distance they are now, and that will give us the peace of mind to finish without having too push too hard." The entry's closest rival “Renault Z. E.”, was at 1,127.6 miles from the Basque duo at the 14:00 GMT position report.

Iker and Xabi will have to take a decision on how to grapple with the lulls soon: "Today or tomorrow we will have to decide where we want to go and to decide where we want to be when we get to this tricky area. The strategy will be based on that; on where we want to be and then push the boat and try to get out of there as soon as we can. Well, we're clear about what we have to do, we'll have to wait and see what everyone else does," said Iker between laughs.

If there's one thing that can always be said about Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández's connection with the organisers each day, it's that they seem to have a great atmosphere of good humour on board "MAPFRE".

Looking for new opportunities

The Doldrums mean, in many ways, a new hand of cards being dealt in the game. The Martínez-Fernández duo is focusing on that to get the best out of themselves: "The Doldrums may be our chance and we are going to give it our best. We haven't got much to lose, because those behind us are one thousand miles away and those in front weren't that far away, even if they are getting away from us right now. It'll be tough, but why not give it a go? It's worth a try."

To get somewhere, Iker described the ideal circumstances to do so: "Right now, the fact that the Doldrums are enormous and that there is total chaos is good for us, because we might be lucky and come out well from them. If we aren't so lucky, we are in a situation in which we haven't got a great amount to lose, if those behind don't get too close, of course. Right now, I think that the more of a mess there is, the better it is for us, because we could get lucky and find ourselves with an opportunity to make the most of."
