Following this trial run, the organising team of the APCC Voile Sportive is delighted with the outcome and will certainly renew the experience. The next edition will be widely publicised with numerous champions of high-level sailing and perhaps international sailors too and a very attractive village.

This test of team racing on the Loire has been a great success, both as a sporting event and on the media level too. It surprised, partly due to its originality and partly due to its location in the centre of Nantes. The 'team racing' configuration enthralled the spectactors, who were very taken with the competition and the eager duels between the teams. The participants loved racing on this unique stretch of water. The vaguaries of the current or wind, although capricious, did not preclude the tough battles or production of a high level spectacle.

At the end of this great weekend, it was Damien Iehl and his team, accompanied by Christophe Guéna, who won.

We returned to the subject of this great victory in an interview with Damien Iehl the day after the Duels sur Loire:

"Do you like the concept of the Duels sur Loire and participating in this?"

Damien Iehl : "I certainly like the concept, and to be able to sail in the centre of Nantes is really awesome. I always want to get to know more of our sport and I think that finding the formula for sailing the closest possible to the side/coast is a manner of interesting the public in our sport, which is not so complicated as all that, but we are usually far from land and therein lies the difficulty of media engagement."

"You won, with the team of Christophe Guéna, 8 races to 4 ! What made the difference?"

DI : "Why we won? I don't know, but the objective was clear - not to finish last. I tried to do all I could to be as collective as possible. One tried to keep an opponent behind. That worked well.

"It is necessary to recognise that it is team racing and that bears resemblance to match racing but it is very different, so it is necessary to adapt to the game."

"What are your projects for next season? Are you thinking of continuing with match racing?"

DI : "I am passionate about match racing, I really like the concept of intense racing, with equal weapons and the only difference being due to the team. But I like sailing in general. Now my dream is to participate in the America's Cup as helmsman.

"Today, the American winners of the Cup, have decided to change the boat, no longer a monohull, but a catamaran. I want to go in this direction, I am looking for a sponsor to compete in a top level circuit in a 40 foot catamaran, which has existed since 2007, the Extreme 40. This circuit is in the same mould as match racing: very intense. Everyone has an identical boat at the start, but it is fleet racing. This boat is similar too, but smaller than, the America's Cup boat. Now I am not going to leave match racing just like that. I finished 3rd in the World in 2009 and I think that match racing enables one to keep very good reflexes which can only be of assistance. Obviously everything depends on on the financial support that I receive from my Club, the FFVoile and my sponsors.

"My goal is clear: to remain at the highest level and take part in the next America's Cup, at the helm, if possible."

In French:

Ça a bien fonctionné.
